Empowerment Focused Coaching Resource Center
The International Coach Federation (ICF) defines coaching as a professional practice that involves a skilled individual who provides support, empowerment, and constructive challenges to aid individuals in the realization of their personal and professional goals. At its core, the coaching dynamic develops a heightened relationship of trust between those seeking guidance (the client) and an expert who can empower individuals with the support and tools necessary to achieve their goals (the coach). Within this dynamic, the coach works alongside the client to facilitate their objectives and offers ongoing guidance to develop and implement a strategic plan to attain these goals.
Coaching
Coaching is a professional collaboration where the coach and client work together to identify areas for improvement and achieve specific goals. In coaching, we help clients assess their current situation and clarify their future goals. It's all about setting achievable objectives, creating a clear plan, and keeping each other accountable. Unlike counseling or therapy, coaching mainly deals with current and future challenges, rather than delving into the client's past to overcome obstacles.
A Consultant or Mentor
A consultant or mentor provides guidance to the client through methods like offering advice or making suggestions. Consultants are usually specialized in a single area and focus more on the process over the individual.
Psychotherapy or Counseling
Psychotherapy or counseling delves into matters like family background and profound emotional traumas to unearth the underlying causes of behavior patterns. In contrast, coaching centers on identifying specific challenges or areas for improvement and creating tailored strategies to promote change, personal growth, and enhancement. A good coach will identify if a client is struggling with significant psychological distress and refer them to a therapist for treatment. In the case of underlying psychological trauma, coaching is effective only when clients are functioning adequately with the support of a mental health professional. Our primary focus during coaching addresses issues outside of mental health and can only be achieved once necessary treatment is successfully completed.
Nursing Burnout and Stress
According to the American Nurses Association (ANA), two of the top acute and chronic effects of stressors for nurses are safety and health concerns. Some of the stressors that Nurses are faced with are working long hours, severe fatigue, poor work-life integration, which increases stress. This lead to poor work performance and a decreased ability to provide top-notch patient care. In addition, the emotional demands are vast, and the physical demands and fatigue can be stressful. The ethical and moral stresses of the job are always in the back of a nurse’s mind. They may often find difficult to turn it all off when they are at home with their families. Chronic stress can negatively affect the immune, digestive, and reproductive systems and disrupt sleep. If stress is not managed effectively it can lead to chronic disease, hypertension, diabetes, depression, and anxiety.
Post-traumatic stress Disorder
Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a mental health condition that’s triggered by a terrifying event, either by experiencing it or witnessing it. The symptoms may include flashbacks, nightmares, and severe anxiety, as well as uncontrolled thoughts about the event. The symptom of PTSD usually begins within three months of the traumatic event, but sometimes they occur later. To meet the criteria for PTSD, a person must have symptoms for longer than one month. The symptoms must be severe enough to interfere with aspects of daily life. PTSD in adults must have the following symptoms for at least one month, at least one re-experiencing symptoms, at least one avoidance symptom, at least two arousal and reactivity symptoms, at least two cognition and mood symptoms, flashbacks, recurring memories, or dreams related to the event. Additional symptoms include, distressing thoughts, experiencing physical signs of stress, avoidance, being easily startled, feeling tense, on guard, on edge, having difficulty concentrating, falling and staying asleep, irritability, anger, aggressive outburst, and engaging in risky behavior.
Stress management is defined as the tools, strategies, and techniques necessary to reduce stress and its negative effects on your mental and physical health and well-being. A stress management expert will be able to identify stressors in your life while working to provide useful solutions. Coaching involves a variety of approaches, both mental and emotional, along with behavioral strategies that require consistent practice to see results. Stress can trigger conditions such as anxiety, depression, and physical ailments, while chronic stress can exacerbate these conditions and lead to chronic health conditions. It’s important to understand and identify stressors in your life, since chronic stress left untreated can inhibit successful coaching.
Discussing your struggles with trusted friends and family members is an excellent coping mechanism. However, a coach will have professional experience and training that is necessary for providing you with the help you need. A coach will be able to identify areas you wish to improve, including things you may not have recognized before, develop attainable action plans, provide structure, and a hold you to a level of accountability that will help you work toward and achieve your goals.
Additionally, many people simply don’t have a support group of close confidants or people who have their best interests at heart. Others even feel embarrassed to tell their loved ones about their struggles. There is also a risk that if you experience strong negative emotions while confiding in a loved one, you may subconsciously associate the negative experience with them causing harm to your relationship even after things get better.
A coach will value your confidentiality, will not seek to use your words against you, and will not judge you. Honesty is necessary for successful treatment, and it is often easier to be open during a coaching session without the fear of what your loved ones may think.
Health coaching involves guided, evidence-based conversations that explore various aspects such as strategies, values, partnership dynamics, empowerment, motivation, relationship building, trust, and respect. This process helps identify challenges and obstacles while providing support and establishing accountability measures. It's essential for a health coach to adopt a non-judgmental stance, acknowledging that the client possesses unique insights into their own body and health. Through skillful guidance, the health coach helps the client institute lifelong changes and establish a sense of well-being.
Coaching is a dynamic partnership that harnesses motivation through support, non-judgmental guidance, solution-oriented thinking, transformational strategies, client-centric approaches, and a commitment to accountability.
